The hour
What happens at a consult
Four parts, in order.
- 01
Step 1: Before we come
Text us photos of the rooms and of anything you're keeping: a rug, a sofa, a piece of art.
- 02
Step 2: Room by room
We hold sample boards against each wall in the light the room really has, and talk through undertones.
- 03
Step 3: Three choices
You leave with three boards: a main color, an alternative and an accent.
- 04
Step 4: A week with them
Tape them up. When you've decided, the estimators write the job up with every color by name.
Counting colors
How many colors does a house need?
Most houses read well with a main color, a trim white and one or two accents. Fewer colors make rooms feel larger. More are fine when their undertones agree.
The consult is where we count them. We start with the rooms you see from the front door and work outward, so the colors flow from one room to the next.

Before you book
Do I have to hire you to paint afterwards?
No. A consult stands on its own. If you take the boards and paint the rooms yourself, that's fine.
What does a consult cost?
We state the fee when you book, before the visit. The estimate says whether it is credited toward the job.
Who comes to the house?
Usually Mariama Sow, the color consultant. In busy weeks one of the estimators comes instead, with the same boards.
I haven't closed on the house yet.
Send us photos and the floor plan and we'll say what can wait until you have the keys.
